Disaster Recovery for Businesses

Disasters are an unfortunate fact of life, especially if you live near a coastline. El Niño, Katrina, Irene, and now Sandy have all hit and left havoc behind. If you’re a small business, disasters like hurricanes can take an enormous toll. But there are some things you can do to help yourself in case of an emergency.

If your business has taken damage from a natural disaster, you should immediately let your insurer know the situation. Do this before cleaning up any damage. Many insurance companies will need to survey the damage to give you an estimate, and if you’ve cleaned it all up, you’ve taken away evidence to support your claims. It may be inconvenient, but keep damaged materials around until you’ve gotten surveyed.

If you’re in need of financial assistance, check out the Small Business Administration. You might be able to get a long-term, low-rate business loan to help with the cost of any damage or economic downturn caused by disaster.

Be sure to communicate with any customers or clients about what’s going on. Let them know when business resumes or if there were any other ill effects from the disaster—shipping delays, inventory issues, etc. Also connect with them on a personal level, sending well wishes via e-mail or social media. Be honest about the situation and give them as many details as you can.

Be aware that federal aid might not come quickly, and be prepared to deal with that accordingly. If you’re in a big area, like New York, there will most likely be lots of claims stacking up. It can take some time to get through them and to you. Have a backup plan if this is the case.

Be prepared: have a disaster plan that outlines how you will respond in case of a disaster. Be sure to consider things like how you will deal with incoming business before, during, and after a disaster. Consider all the worst options, so you’ll be prepared for whatever happens. Back up data on a regular basis to a cloud service so that if computer hardware is destroyed, you won’t have to start from scratch.

There are always too many “what ifs” to think about when it comes to preparing for the worst. But they are worth considering so that you’ll know how to handle things and keep afloat if and when disaster strikes.

Fad Diet Fast Facts

As it becomes winter most of us start to worry about all of the food that we'll be eating come the holidays.  And an increasing number of people are looking into ways of dieting that will help them avoid being overweight. The problem these days is that dieting has become a fad of sorts, and every time you turn around, there’s another diet people are swearing by. And while some of them may be solid, safe options, others might be misunderstood.

Yahoo! Shine blogger Janet Lee took a look at some of today’s most popular diets and offered some advice to readers who are thinking about trying one out. Let’s take a look at what she found out:

Green smoothies are highly concentrated mixes of green veggies and fruits. They are packed with vitamins and minerals and are an easy way to get all your servings of produce in. But they’re low in calories and shouldn’t be used as a meal replacement.

Gluten-Free diets are really only necessary for those with Celiac’s disease or sensitivity to gluten. But limiting gluten intake can be a good way to cut calories, and it’s perfectly healthy to live without it.

Chia Seeds are filled with Omega-3 fatty acids and fiber, and soak up liquid to help fill you up. They can be a great way to add more fiber and omega-3 if your normal diet is lacking.

Bee Pollen contains large amounts of carbohydrates, protein, antioxidants, and vitamins and can be sprinkled on various foods. It’s been used for centuries in Chinese herbal remedies, but there’s not yet conclusive scientific evidence of its benefits. It’s certainly not harmful to give it a try if you’re interested.

Coconut Water is slightly sweet and milky. Quality brands are high in potassium and electrolytes. It’s basically an all-natural sports drink, and while it can be used as a substitute for water, be sure to remember that it contains about 5 calories per ounce.

The Paleo Diet emphasizes a more all-natural diet full of fish, meats, fruits, vegetables, and nuts. It cuts out dairy and most grains as well. People adhering to the diet tend to rapidly lose weight because your body begins metabolizing fat differently. And though it can be difficult to cut out carbs, sugars, and processed food, it’s perfectly healthy and a good way to reduce your risk of obesity and heart disease.

Rocky Top Marketing Group just finished its October contest!

Rocky Top Marketing Group had a great contest last month.  Dedicated to helping to improve the skills of their team and sales force, Rocky Top Marketing Group offered an incentive to all of their employees in their offices in Knoxville.

Because UT Football is the highlight of everybody's fall, Rocky Top Marketing Group provided tickets to the top two marketing reps in Knoxville for when the Missouri Tigers came to visit the UT Volunteers for this fall classic.

The winners for the November tickets for the game are Ty O'Grady and Cory Whitton.  They got to go see the game this last weekend, and it looks like they enjoyed themselves immensely.

Of course, this isn't the only such contest that Rocky Top Marketing Group has organized.  The firm continually works with its team to find new and interesting ways to engage their staff and increase sales.  Some previous outings and prizes have included a camping trip to the Smoky's, Braves games, and several outings on Norris lake this past summer.

Perhaps this is why Rocky Top Marketing Group is one of the premier marketing groups in Knoxville. Not only do they have a great team, but they work hard to make sure that everyone in the office has the chances and opportunities they need to succeed further.  And that's part of what makes them great.
